Town raises $108M to help your team operate at the speed of AI
Most of us remember that first magical moment when AI delivered an afternoon’s worth of work in a few minutes.
But work rarely ends at the individual. You need an updated model from finance, or for your ops lead to give you access to an app, or input from your field sales team to update next week’s targets, and progress is stalled while you wait for someone else to reply.
AI has made each of us faster on our own, but the work we do together hasn’t kept up. The more each of us can do, the more we are blocked by others. Our days fill up with waiting, and work slows down to a crawl again.
Building an Assistant for the Work We Do Together
We want AI to be as useful for the work we do together as it already is for the work we do on our own. To that end, we’re announcing our $108M Series B, co-led by Forerunner Ventures and Menlo Ventures, with continued participation from a16z and First Round Capital, as well as Better Tomorrow Ventures, Precedent.vc, Scribble Ventures, Serena Ventures, Sparked Ventures, and notable angels, including Brendan Foody, Josh Silverman, Romain Huet, Scott Belsky, Steve Bartel, Taro Fukuyama, and Varun Anand.
“Townies that work together, so whole teams and organizations can move at the speed of AI.”
From day one, we’ve given each person a Townie who learns their people, projects, and voice, because an assistant can only help with what it understands. Thousands of businesses now rely on Townies to get work done every day.
That was the first step. Now we’re focused on the next one: Townies that work together, so whole teams and organizations can move at the speed of AI.
What AI Assistants Are Missing Today
Today your work assistant knows you, but it can’t work directly with your team. A team bot learns from team channels, but it can’t see anyone’s inbox or preferences, so it never really knows any one person. And in neither case can they work well with folks outside the company.
What if everyone had an assistant that understood the individual and the team? An assistant that understood what to keep private and what to share? An assistant that could handle the back-and-forth just like a human does by using the same emails, texts, and chat we do?
“Less of it waits on you, and you almost never wait on anyone else.”
This is what we’re building at Town.
Everyone gets their own Townie, and Townies work together. When the whole team has one, work starts to feel different. Less of it waits on you, and you almost never wait on anyone else.
Draft in anyone’s voice: Need an executive to step in? Your Townie works with theirs to draft the exact message in their style, so all they have to do is hit send.
Find a warm connection: Your Townie checks across the whole team to see who knows the person you’re trying to reach, asks for the intro, and books the meeting.
Pressure-test before meeting: Before you present, your Townie runs your draft past your teammates’ Townies to catch their biggest questions and fold in their feedback ahead of time.
Update once, apply everywhere: When a teammate improves a process or talking point, every Townie on the team adopts it instantly, so the efficiency gains reach everyone without the usual adoption curve.
Nobody had to schedule a meeting or wait for feedback. Each person made the call only they could make, and their Townies handled the rest.
A New Kind of Company Knowledge
Each of those moments works because Townies know you and your teammates: how the CEO writes, who has the strongest relationship with a buyer, what each lead cares about, the various processes that help run the business. Together, the Townies build a deep understanding of how your company actually runs, one that grows with every exchange.
“We believe that this context is a critical asset and should belong to the company that built it.”
Until Town, that context was trapped in individual heads and inboxes, disappearing whenever someone was too busy or left the company. Town turns that scattered context into a shared, compounding asset that helps your business thrive. Instead of slowing down as you scale, your company grows smarter and faster.
We believe that this context is a critical asset and should belong to the company that built it. That’s why if you ever leave Town, you can take it with you and use it anywhere.
The same respect for your business runs through the rest of Town. By default, none of your context is used to train a model. Town is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, and our DPA is public, putting your business’ privacy and security first. And Town is provider-neutral. We don’t ask you to predict who will have the best or fastest or most cost-effective AI model in the coming years. Instead, we always use the appropriate AI model for each job, so you’re never locked into one provider and always get the right level of intelligence for the best price.
From Walking Alongside to Working Together
Earlier this year, we wrote about building an assistant who walks alongside you. One assistant can do a lot for one person, but we always meant it as a starting point.
The most important work a company does, it does together. Our hope is that by becoming part of how your team collaborates, Townies will transform what’s possible for your company.
